Historic Flight Foundation

"History of Nose Art" Seminars

 

The Historic Flight Foundation will host two seminars on the "History of Aircraft Nose Art" Jan. 28-29. On Friday, Jan. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m., join HFF for an after work event featuring wine tasting and a nose art presentation. Then on Saturday, Jan. 29, HFF presents a seminar on the history of nose art from 9 to noon. A continental breakfast will be served at the event. Admission is $30 for one event or $50 for both. For more information or to make reservations, contact HFF at 425.348.3200

"Beyond the Black Box: The Forensics of Airplane Crashes"
 Thursday, Jan. 20, 7 p.m., Allen Theater, $5 Members, $10 Non-members

Author George Bibel aims to teach high school science through unusual airplane accidents and crashes. His presentation will show how investigators crack the mysteries of accidents and how resulting safety recommendations are incorporated to make flying safer.

 

Mars Fest 2011

Exhibit Opening: Style in the Aisle
 Saturday, Jan. 29, Great Gallery

Style in the Aisle is back! This popular exhibit about flight attendants and their uniforms was first shown in 2008; now it returns featuring fashions not seen in the original exhibit. A dozen complete uniforms will be displayed, dating from the 1930s to the 1980s, representing several different U.S. airlines.

 

Challenger Learning Center Public Mission
 Saturday, Jan. 29, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Challenger Learning Center

Experience the Challenger Learning Center! A simulated space mission that uses hands-on, inquiry-based activities to engage participants in teamwork, communication, problem-solving and critical thinking. For ages 10 years old and up (youth under age 16 must be accompanied by adult). $12/participant; non-participating adults are free. Pre-registration required (deadline Jan. 14). Astronaut Remembrance Weekend

The Museum remembers the fallen astronauts of Apollo 1 and space shuttles STS-51-L Challenger and STS-107 Columbia.

Once a month the Museum stays open late--for free! Enjoy Museum exhibits and galleries from 5 to 9 p.m., courtesy of Wells Fargo.

 

Black History Month Panel Discussion
 Saturday, Feb. 5, 2 p.m., Allen Theater

The Museum celebrates Black History Month with a presentation by African-American civilian and military pilots and crew members who will discuss aviation careers and opportunities. The program will be moderated by U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Kimberly Scott.

 

American Fighter Aces Association Program
 Saturday, Feb. 12, 2 p.m., Allen Theater

The Museum is home to the AFAA, founded to recognize the 1,442 combat pilots who have received the special designation of "ace." Join us for a panel of aces and combat pilots who will share their remarkable stories of heroism.

 

787 Flight Testing: An Update to the Royal Aeronautical Society
 Tuesday, Feb. 15, 6 p.m., Allen Theater

787 Engineering Test Pilot Randy Neville provides an overview of the 787 and flight testing that has occurred in the past year. He will discuss highlights from the 787 flight test program during this special presentation to the RAS and the general public.

 

16th Annual Popsicle Bridge Contest
 Saturday, Feb. 19, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., Allen Theater

The Younger Member Forum of the American Society of Civil Engineers hosts a competition of bridges built using only Popsicle sticks and white glue. Each year, teams of high school students build bridges that are strong and aesthetically pleasing. The bridges will be judged and tested to failure with a hydraulic press.

 

Puget Sound Engineering Council Engineering Fair
 Satuday, Feb. 19, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Side Gallery

The Museum and the PSEC celebrate National Engineers Week with a fair featuring local chapters representing the entire span of engineering disciplines. Several university engineering departments and student clubs will also be represented.

 

2011 NorthWest Scale Modelers Show
 Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Great Gallery

NWSM is the largest model show in the Pacific Northwest. Club members will be on hand all weekend to answer questions about their hobby. Children six and up can participate in a "make and take" workshop sponsored by Galaxy Hobby and Skyway Model Shop.

Museum Members Get $2 Discount on "Legends of Flight 3D" IMAX Movie at Pacific Science Center!

Museum of Flight members can receive $2 off the admission price to the new IMAX movie, "Legends of Flight 3D," now showing at the Pacific Science Center in Seattle! To receive the discount, present your Museum membership card at the Pacific Science Center box office. This offer cannot be used for any other IMAX movie at the Pacific Science Center, and is valid through January 2011.
