Virginia career academy will focus on engineering

Virginia's Daily-Press (9/3, Grimes) reports that six Virginia high schools will serve as "innovation incubators" as part of Gov. Tim Kaine's (D) "Academy for Innovation, Technology and Engineering." This academy is "one of six career and technical education academies announced in January by" Kaine, the Daily-Press points out. "The New Horizons Regional Education Center is the hub of the new school," but the academy's programs will include "several partner businesses and agencies, two colleges, and six school districts." According to the Daily-Press, the "academy's initial focus will be electrical and mechanical engineering technology." These fields "were chosen based on the needs of area employers -- including NASA and Northrop Grumman, two of the academy's partners." In addition, the "academy later will include other fields, including geospatial technologies, modeling and simulation, nanotechnology, and biotechnology." The academy will utilize "a combination of classroom and online instruction to make sure all of the schools have the classes they need," the Daily-Press notes.
