Cessna Announces Layoffs, Plant Closing
The AP (4/29) reported that "Wichita-based Cessna Aircraft Co. is laying off 2,300 workers and closing it's Oregon plant as it tries to restructure amid declinning plane orders." The company "said Wednesday it had started laying off 1,600 workers throughout the company," and that "an additional 700 salaried workers will lose their jobs in mid-june"
Cessna's parent company, Textron Inc., "said it expects to deliver no more than 300 Cessna corporate jets this year, about 20 percent less thatn it's previous forecast, and to stop work on the new Columbus aircraft as a global recession reduces demand," Bloomberg News (4/29, Layne) reported. According to the article, "Cessna started selling the new eight-seat 850 Citation Columbus last year with a goal of starting deliveries in 2014." The intercontinental aircraft was to be "Cessna's largest," but now, "work...will be suspended and Textronsaid it will return about 50 million in deposits."
