Official: Army Future Combat Systems To Be Split Into Three Orders
Bloomberg News (5/22, Ratnam) reports, "The U.S. Army will split its Future Combat Systems Into three orders one each for ground vehicles, software and technology upgrades," according to the service's top military acquisition officer. Lieutenant General Ross Thompson told Congress Thursday that "details on the $159 billion program's restructuring will be announced in a 'matter of days." Defense Secretary Robert Gates said last month "that he would terminate the $87 billion vehicles component of the Future Combat Systems that's managed by Chicago-based Boeing Co. and SAIC Inc. Of San Diego. Gates said he was 'troubled' the the contract allowed the companies to recieve incenitives before work was completed." Thompson said that "the cost to cancel the vehicle contract and restructure the program could be "hundreds of millions of dollars."
