FAA Looking Into Cracks On American Airlines 767s

The Wall Street Journal (6/22, Pasztor) reports the FAA has been working with Boeing and American Airlines after cracks were found on several 767 jets. The FAA said, "We are considering additional action, including requiring more frequent inspections." According to the article, Boeing was surprised by some of the details of the cracks, like their size and type. However, all parties agree that these cracks were not due to any missed or faulty inspections.

The NBC Dallas-Fort Worth (6/22, Friedman) website reports, "American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner confirmed that the Fort Worth-based airline has already inspected 54 of 56 planes affected. Wagner said the airline hoped to have the remaining two aircraft checked by the end of the day Monday or early Tuesday morning." The article, like the WSJournal, notes the "cracks came as a surprise to American and FAA officials because they happened well within the FAA's required time frame for inspection of the pylons. Still, the airline said it detected the problems before they became a threat."
